What Do People Really Think About Tattooed Women?
Exploring opinions through street interviews for Ink & Story
Tattoos have always carried meaning. For some, they’re art. For others, they’re rebellion, memory, or healing. But how do people really feel when they see a woman with tattoos—especially as she gets older?
As part of my Ink & Story project, I took to the streets to find out. With a camera in hand, I asked everyday people one simple question:
“What comes to mind when you see a tattooed woman?”
The answers were anything but simple.
Surprising Perspectives
Some responses celebrated tattoos as self-expression and empowerment:
“It shows confidence. She’s telling her story on her own skin.”
Others revealed lingering stereotypes:
“I think of someone who’s a little rebellious—maybe even tough.”
And then there were voices of curiosity and respect:
“I always wonder what the tattoo means. There’s usually a deeper story there.”
Why This Conversation Matters
For many women, tattoos are not just designs—they’re chapters of their lives. Yet, public opinion can shape how they are perceived, celebrated, or even judged. By capturing these candid street interviews, my goal is to spark authentic dialogue and challenge assumptions about what it means to wear your story on your skin.
This blog—and the accompanying video series—will feature diverse perspectives from all walks of life. You might agree with some, disagree with others, but that’s the point: the conversation is the art.
